THE GAMMA DECAY OF THE 10.22-Mev STATE IN N$sup 1$$sup 4$
The gamma ray spectrum due to the decay of the 10.22Mev excited state in N/sup 14/ was investigated using the reaction Mev and applying three crystal pair spectrometer techniques. The most prominent transition from this state was found to lead to the J/sup pi / = O/sup +/, 2.31-Mev first excited state. The cross section for this transition was determined to be (36 plus or minus 8) mu b (using 700 mu b for the E/sub p/ = 3.11 Mev resonance). The total width of the state was determined to be 85 plus or minus 15 kev and the resonance was located at E/sub p/ = 2.885 plus or minus 0.010 Mev. The gamma width of the 10.22 yields 2.31 transition is determined to be (2J + 1) GAMMA /sub 4gg/ = 12 plus or minus 4 ev which excludes J/sup pi / = 2/sup -/ the angular distribution of the 10.22 yields 2.31 transition the assignments J/sup pi / = 2/sup +/ and 1/sup -/ are excluded and an assignment J/sup pi / = 1/sup +/ is given to the 10.22-Mev state assuming the 10.22-Mev state to be a well-isolated single level with respect to the decay to the 2.31-Mev state. The strength STAM(M1)!/sup 2/ of the 10.22 yields 2.31 M1-transition supports a T = 0 assignment for the 10.22-Mev stute. Furthermore, several gamma rays due to the direct radiative capture of a proton into the presumably p/sub 1/2 s/sub 1/2/ and p/sub 1/2 states in N/sup
