PROPERTIES OF THE /eta/ MESON
Results are presented from 102 charged eta meson decays produced in four- pronged reactions of a pi /sup +/ beam in the Brookhaven 20-inch hydrogen bubble chamber at incident energies of 1090 and 1260 Mev. At both energies, a large number of cases of the reactions pi /sup +/ + p yields P plus or minus pi / sup +/ + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup -/ and pi /sup +/ + p yields p + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup -/ + pi /sup 0/ were observed. From reactions consistent with the production of an eta meson, several properties of the eta meson were indicated. The half-width of the eta is less than 5 Mev. Its mass is 548 plus or minus 1 Mev and 551 plus or minus 2 Mev from the 1090 and 1260 Mev data, respectfully. The results favor 0/sup -+/ for the spin, parity, and G-parity, and definitely exclude the simple isospin-conserving assignments 0/sup --/, 1/sup +-/, and 1/sup --/. A small amount of the decay mode ( pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ gamma ) was present in the data. (H.D.R)
