IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO BOILING MODERATOR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4674824
The design of a reactor fuel element is patented, which is designed to overconae the problem of warped fiux and power distributions in a boiling moderator reactor. The total fissile and fertile atom content per unit length decreases, but the fissile atom content per unit length is substantially uniform along the length of the fuel element. This is achieved by constructing an elongated fuel element from a plurality of axially aligned fuel pellets, which are either solid or hollow but have equal fissile atom content. The variation in the average number of hollow fuel pellets per unit length of fuel element is arranged to provide flattened pseudosquare-wave neutron flux and power distributions through the core.
