BOILING WATER REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4837135
In a boiling water reactor the creation of steam bubbles during the operation induces a different depletion of fuel in the different core zones as a result of the different average moderator density caused by the steam bubbles. In order to avoid excessive differences in depletion of the fuel, the fuel elements have an elongated form, so that the average total amount of fuel (fissile and fertile) decreases along the element axis in the direction of flow of the boiling water through the core. The fuel element is provided with a uniform amount of fissile material per unit length. The local multiplication factor K/sub eff/ is held constant in this way along the path of the boiling water flow. (NPO)
