THE CONVERSION OF A SMALL LABORATORY INTO A LOW BACKGROUND ROOM SUITABLE FOR COUNTING WHOLE BODY RADIATION

Journal Article · · Brit. J. Radiol.
A small basement laboratory was converted into a low background room for whole-body counting. Wall and ceiling shielding was provided by 2 ft of compressed chalk in the form of interlocking bricks having a density of approximately 2 g/cc. A 5-in.-thick steel sliding door permftted access. The inside of the room was lined with 0.25 in. of aged Pb backed by 0.25 in. of steel. The floor was constructed of 0.25-in. steel plate built up to a thickness of 5 in. laid on a 2-ft bed of low-activity concrete. Results are included from measurements of the gamma background of the room. (C.H.)
