REACTIONS OF CeO$sub 3$, Nd$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$, AND Sm$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$ WITH MOLTEN FLUORIDES

Isothermal studies of CeO/sub 2/, Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ re actions with eutectic mixture NaF--KF, cryolites, and eutectic mixtures of cryolite and sodium fluoride showed that 0.1 wt% Ce and 0.7 to 0.7 wt% Sm diffuse into NaF-KF mixture after 4 hours at 1000 to 1100 deg C. Eutectic diagrams indicate 5.5 mole% CeO/sup 2/ at 880 deg C and 1.2 mole% Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at 963 deg C. The liquidus system of Na/sub 3/AlF/sub 6/-Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ exhibits eutectics at 12 mole% Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at 904 deg C. Endothermal reactions were observed in non-melted Na/sub 3/AlF/sub 6/-Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ mixtures. At 798 deg C 22 mole% CeO/sub 2/ dissolves in the Na/sub 3/AlF/sub 6/NaF mixture. (R.V.J.)
