THE Al$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$-Sm$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$ AND Al$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$-Gd$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$ SYSTEM (in Russian)

The solidus and liquidus temperatures for Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ --Sm/sub 2/O/ sub 3/ and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/--Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were determined in the temperature range 1700 to 2350 deg C. Specimens containing up to 99.5 wt.% of the basic component were used. Thermal analysis of the heats of formation indicated (from Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ side) that the melting point for Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ --Sm/ sub 2/O/sub 3/ is 1770 plus or minus 26 deg C. The eutectic for the rare-earth oxide side in Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/--Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is at 1860 plus or minus 20 deg C and for Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/--Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is at l930 plus or minus 20 deg C. Compounds of SmAlO/sub 3/ and GdAlO3/sub /lt without decompo->i sition at 2060 plus or minus 20 deg C. The microstructure of the systems indicated eutectics at rare-earth oxide contents between 20 to 25 mole % (low melting point eutectic) and 70 to 75
