GENETIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE ACTION OF FAST NEUTRONS ON THE SEXUAL CELLS OF MALE MICE (in Russian)

The effects of fast neutrons on the sexual cells of 2.5 to 4-months old male mice were investigated using the appearance of dominant lethal mutations in the spermatids and the spermatozoid cells as criterion. The animals were exposed to a 1-Mev average energy fast-neutron beam in the horizontal beamhole of an IRT- type reactor, using the ionization method for dosimetric measurements. The dose rate used amounted to 700, 314, and 258 rad/hr, with an associated gamma radiation rate of 100, 86, and 70.5 rad/hr. Total fastneutron doses of 17, 34, 57, 114, 171, and 228 rad were used. The irradiated animals were mated with unirradiated females, determining the number of yellow bodies in the ovary, the implantations in the uterus and the number of viable embryos. The results indicated that an increase of the fast neutron dose caused an increase in the number of the embryos lost. The following exponential correlation could be determined between the appearance of lethal mutations and the fast neutron dose: f(D) = 1 -- e/sup -mD/, in which D designates the dose and m the probability of the appearance of a dominant lethal mutation in a sexual cell per unit dose. This rate was found to be, in average, 6.0 x 10/sup -3/. The results indicated that the relative genetic effectiveness of fast neutrons on the spermatozoid cells is about 4 times higher than that of the x rays. (TTT)
