COMPARISON OF THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF FAST NEUTRONS AND X-RADIATION ON THE GONADS OF MICE (in Russian)

ABS>In view of the contradictory data in the literature on the radiation sensitivity of the gonads of mammals, the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of fast neutrons was studied on 3-month-old white mice. The animals were exposed to total doses of 20, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 800, 800, and 1600 r of x radiation and to 17, 34, 57, 114, 171, and 228 rad of fast neutrons in the horizontal beamhole of an IRT-type reactor. The degree of damage of the gonads was determined on the basis of the changes in their weight and their histological picture. It was found that in every case the largest weight loss occurred 28 days after the irradiation. Even small doses caused a relatively large reduction in the weight, but the rate of the weight reduction decreased with increasing integral doses. This is due to the fact that the embryonic epithelium disappears as a result of the exposure to radiation and at large doses only relatively radiation-resistant components are present in the gonads. For both types of radiation, a linear correlation was found to exist between the weight-loss rate and the logarithm of the dose; 206 plus or minus 3 r of x radiation and 54 plus or minus 2 rad of fast neutron dose caused a weight loss of 50%. The RBE of fast neutrons is thus found to be 3.5 in average. (TTT)
