Anisotropic bulk Sm{sub 2}(Fe,M){sub 17}N{sub x} magnets were prepared by rotation aligning easy plane Sm{sub 2}(Fe,M){sub 17} powders followed by sintering and nitriding. Vanadium substitution for iron can help the {ital c}-axis alignment compared to the binary Sm{sub 2}Fe{sub 17} compound. Magnets with an energy product of 15 MGOe and an intrinsic coercivity of 7 kOe were obtained on a single phase Sm{sub 2}Fe{sub 16.15}V{sub 0.85}N{sub x} compound with a density of 91{percent} of theoretical density. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
