The principle is discussed for nitriding a sintered Sm{sub 2}(Fe,M){sub 17}C{ital {sub x}} (M=metal) intermetallic compound. It is found that a bulk anisotropic magnet with the main composition of Sm{sub 2}(Fe,M){sub 17}C{ital {sub x}}N{ital {sub y}} can be formed with a density of about 90{percent} of full density. The physical integrity of the magnet is retained. As an example, an anisotropic magnet with the composition of Sm{sub 2}Fe{sub 16.6}Cr{sub 0.4}C{sub 1.2}N{ital {sub y}} shows a coercivity of 6.3 kOe, a remanence, {ital M{sub r}}, of 790 G, and an energy product of 15 MGOe at room temperature. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
