Study on Photomultipliers with Optical Impulses; UNTERSUCHUNGEN AN PHOTOMULTIPLIERN MIT OPTISCHEN IMPULSEN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4671333
A test-apparatus was developed for measuring the characteristics of photomultipliers in the nanosecond range. With periodical light-pulses (1/2 nsec rise- and falltime, 2 nsec pulse width at half maximum) the spread of transit time with respect to the illumination point on the photocathode, the total transit time, the risetime of the output signal and the gain can be measured as a function of parameters like high voltage or electrode-voltages. The output pulses are displayed on a Tektronix Sampling oscilloscope, Type 661. Different photomultipliers can be tested, and it is possible to find out the most qualified photomultiplier for a specified application. As an example the measurements made with a Philips 56AVP are described. (auth)
