VERTICAL ARM SPECTROMETER (Engineering Materials)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4670722

The vertical-arm spectrometer, completed in 1962, is desrgned to avoid the useless space swept by a horizontal spectrometer. The instrument is one of the neutron spectrometers used at the graphite Brookhaven Research Reactor. This unit, using a vertical beam hole on top of the reactor, raises the arm through 60 deg . This arm, which is attached to a five-ton cylindrical crystal shield, supports the beam tube and a one-ton neutron detector. The detector is located five meters from the crystal. A steel frame guides two elevating chains that are used to raise and lower the arm. This frame acts as a safety device by locking the arm if the chains fails. (F.E.S.)
