HDIX SPECTROMETER (Engineering Materials)
The HDIX spectrometer used for neutron-diffraction experiments to study single crystal and powder samples is described. Accessories such as magnets, cryostats, and furnaces can be accommodated. The components are the first crystal shield, the goniometer, the pedestal, the diffractometer, and the counter shield. The first crystal shield houses the first or monochromator crystal and attenuates all incident rays, except the selected monochromatic beam which passes through an exit collimator. The goniometer is located in the shield and allows 3 dimensional alignment of the first crystal. The pedestal supports the shield and the diffractometer and rotates about a vertical axis to orient the diffractometer in the path of the monochromatic beam. The diffractometer supports the sample and measures the angular relationship between the monochromatic beam, the sample, and the counter. Drives allow either continuous or step scanning. The counter shield houses the BF/sub 3/ proportional counter and a collimator. (F.E.S.)
