AN INVESTIGATION OF THE DECAY PROPERTIES OF P$sup 30$ (thesis)
Spectral measurements were made on ten resonances occurring in the proton radiative capture reaction on Si/sup 29/ in the proton energy range from 1 to 1.85 Mev. Decay schemes for the compound nucleus P/sup 30/ thus formed were proposed for the seven resonance levels at 1302, 1470, trometer measurements and intensity measurements show the following results for branching ratios of intermediate excited levels: for the 4.62-Mev level, a branching ratio of 86: 14 for transitions to levels 3 and 2; for the 4.23Mev level, a branching ratio of 10: 64: 26 for transitions to levels 0, 4, and 5; for the 4.14-Mev level, a branching ratio of 88: 12 for transitions to levels 0 and 3; for the 2.84-Mev level, a 100% transition to the ground state. Branching ratios of other levels are found to be consistent with previously reported work. Angular distribution measurements were performed at the resonances formed at proton energies of 1302, 1505, and 1686 kv. The results of these measurements show J/sup pi / (1302) = 11; J/sup pi / (1505) = 2+; J/sup 4pi/ (1686) = 2+. Results for intermediate excited levels show j/sup 4pi/ (4.23-Mev level) = 2+; j/sup pi / (2.54-Mev level) = 3+; j (4.50-Mev level) consistent with spin zero. Theoretical angular distributions for the general case of spin-1/2 particles incident on spin-1/2 nuclei were calculated for decay radiations from the resonance level for various spins and parities, and for intermediate-unobserved radiations terminating in a 1+ level. The maxima and minima of the coefficients in the theoretical distributions were computed for all these cases. 40 references. (auth)
