ANGULAR DISTRIBUTIONS OF NEUTRONS FROM Al$sup 27$(d,n) Si$sup 2$$sup 8$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
By using the method of proton recoils in nuclear emulsions angular distributions of neutrons emitted to low-lying statcs of Si/sup 28/ in the reaction Al/sup 27/(d,n)Si/sup 28/ have been obtaine d at deuteron energies of 2.16 and 6.00 Mev. As might be expected, the angular distributions obtained at E/ sub d/ = 2.l6 Mev show considerable deviations from the predictions of the simple Butler stripping thcory. The angular distributions obtained at E/sub d/ = 6.00 Mev have been analyzed by means of the Butler theory to obtain parities and limits on the spins of Si/sup 28/ states. These results are, for the ground state J/sup pi / == 0/sup +/, l/sup +/, 4/sup +/, or 5/sup +/; l.78-Mev state, J/ sup pi / = 2/sup +/ or 3/sup +/; 4.62-Mev state, J/sup pi / l/sup -/to 4/sup -/ ; 6.24-Mev state, J/sup pi / = 2/sup +/ or 3/sup +/; 6.88Mev state, J/sup pi / = (1/sup -/to 4/sup -/); 7.90-Mev state, J/sup pi / =2/sup +/ or 3/sup +/,; 8.57- Mev state, J/sup pi / = 2/sup +/ or 3/sup +/; 9.39-Mev state, J/sup pi / = 2/ sup +/ or 3/sup +/. It is pointed out that the odd parity of the 4.62-Mev state of Si/sup 28/ is consistent with the possible shell-model states of a spheroidal nucleus. (auth)
