The method given is for producing nuclear fuel elements consisting of a mixture of uranium oxides the sintering qualities of which are comparable to those of non-stoichiometric UO/sub 2/. The method comprises the steps of preparing a mixture of UO/sub 2/- and U/sub 3/O/sub 8/-powder, the U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ conten t being 5 to 45 wt%, of compacting this mixture, and of pressing and sintering the compact in an inert gas atmosphere at a temperature of 1200 to 1500 deg C.
