METHOD FOR PRODUCING HIGH DENSITY URANIUM OXIDE

A method is given for producing UO/sub 2/ pellets with a density 95% of theoretical density, using relatively low temperatures and pressures. The method comprises mixing UO/sub 2/ and U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ or oxidized scrap UO/sub 2/ to give an O/U ratio of 2.20 to 2.40, adding a binder, pressing the mixture at 10 tsi, sintering for 2 hr at 1300 to 1315 deg C in N/sub 2/, reducing the compacts for 10 min at 1300 deg C in H/sub 2/, and finally cooling slowly in H/sub 2/.
