Investigations were made on the influence of cystamine hydrochloride and S, beta-aminoethylisothiuronium hydrobromide on the oxygen balance in the human organism. Cystamine in peroral doses of 200-600 mg causes a rise of the basal metabolism, increased oxygen consumption in the lungs, intensified respiration of erythrocytes (in the presence of glucose), and reduction of methemoglobin. S, beta-aminoethylisothiuronium in similar doses causes a drop of the basal metabolism and a diminution of the coefficient of oxygen consumption in the lungs. S,-beta-aminoethylisothiuronium, in contrast to cystamine, penetrates the erythrocyte membrane but weakly. A supposition is made on the diverse mechanisms of antiradiation effect of the preparations.
