IS THE ROENTGEN DOSE NECESSARY FOR INDUCTION OF TEMPORARY EPILATION APPLIED TO HAIR FOLLICLES LESS WITH SOFT THAN WITH HARD RADIATION
Attempts were made to confirm the conclusions of Proppe and Wagner (Strahlentherapie, 114: 39(1961)) that the biologic activity of soft radiation is greater than that of hard radiation at equivalent doses. In patients with skin diseases, 150 tests were made of the epilation induced by x rays varying in intensity from 29 to 130 kv. It was found that the magnitude of the epilating dose delivered to the hair follicles was independent of the quality of radiation. Similarly, the time for induction of epilation and time for regrowth of hair were independent of the quality. The calculated threshold dose for complete epilation, considering the hair follicle to be at a skin depth of 3 mm, varied between 312 and 350 r. Epilation occurred on an average of 16 days after irradiation and new hair appeared 2.5 to 3 months postirradiation. Hence the results indicate that soft x rays are not more effective than hard x rays at equivalent r doses. (H.H.D.)
