Changes of adenosine triphosphatase activity under conditions of radiation sickness induced by polonium were studied. The investigation was carried out using as a model acute radiation sickness induced in rats by a single subcutaneous injection of polonium in the amount of 0.1 mC/kg. Death of the animals ensued on the 12th-16th day. Animals were decapitated on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 15th days after injury. Activity of the enzyme was determined in a water-soluble protein fraction of liver, spleen, kidneys, and brain. The change in the activity of the enzyme was estimated from the increase of inorganic phosphorus, which was determined by colorimetry. In healthy animals, the kidney and liver exhibit greater enzymic activity, while the spleen and brain display a lesser one. Slight fluctuations in the activity of the enzyme were noted in each investigated organ. Polonium-injected animals showed a distinct decrease of adenosine triphosphatase activity in all investigated organs. Depression of the enzymic activity progressed until the 3rd to 5th day after injury at which time it gradually increased. At no time did enzymic activity in the injured animals reach the level of the lower boundary of normal animals. Thus it was concluded that the damage of sulfhydryl enzymes plays a defirite role in the mechanism of radiation injury. (H.M.G.)
