Thorium(IV) and Na alizarin 3-sulfonate combine in the ratio of 1: 2 to give a pink-colored chelate exhibiting maximum absorbance at 520 m mu . The chelate is stable between pH 2.85 and 8.00. The value of log K (stability constant) was found to be 8.2 plus or minus 0.2 and that of the free energy change of formation to be --11.4 plus or minus 0.3 kcal at pH 4.5, temperature 30 deg C, and ionic strength 0.1M.
