THE MODE OF ACTION OF RADIOPROTECTIVE AGENTS (in French)

Journal Article · · Annee Biologique (France)

Since the discovery in 1949 of the first chemical radioprotectors in the animal, there have been proposed different theories to explain the mechanism of the appearance of the radiolesions and the mode of action of radioprotectors. These theories are concisely reported. The mode of action of x rays on cells was explained first by the target theory aud then by the addition of the indirect effect theory. The mechanisms of radioprotection by anoxia proposed to explain the manner in which molecular oxygen can modify the types of radicals formed by irradiation are examined. The principal theories on the mechanism of chemical radioprotectors are the reduction theory, the competition theory, and the combination theory. These are briefly reviewed. The evidence of free radicals on the mechanism is indicated. 51 references. (J.S.R.)
