The Effect of Acidity on the Hydrogen Yield in Gamma-Irradiated Aqueous Solutions
The initial yield of molecular H in gamma -irradiated aqueous solutions was measured as a function of acidity in the range from neutral to 10M H₂SO₄. A decrease in H yield with increasing acidity was observed. It was concluded that the gross number of radicals formed per unit absorbed dose is independent of pH. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed. (C.H.)
