Experiments were carried out to ascertain whether the double-bond radiolability of citraconic acid is different from that of its isomer mesaconic acid in aqueous solution. Solutions of mesaconic and citraconic acids of various molarities were irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation at various levels. The number of events for every 100 ev absorbed were calculated at every concentration by the least-squares method from the initial slope of the plot of the number of molecules destroyed against absorbed ev. The radiation yields increased for both compounds with the concentrations of soludiation yields of the two isomers are different. Results are compared with previously obtained values for fumaric and maleic acids. It was concluded that a steric factor plays a part in the double-bond stability of gamma -irradiated solutions of fumaric, maleic, citraconic, and mesaconic acids. (C.H.)
