Aqueous solutions of Acridine orange (AO) were irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. In the first case only irreversible decoloration of the dye was observed, due to the oxidative action of two OH radicals per molecule of the dye. Upon irradiation of air-free solutions a recovery was observed on admission of air to the extent of 55%. The reversible decoloration in this case is attributed to reduction caused by two H atoms per molecule of the dye. The decoloration yield in the presence of air was found to be independent of the concentration of the dye, the pH of the solution, and the gamma dose-rate, within a wide range, and equal to 1.25 plus or minus 0.05. The behavior of the system agalnst the radiation in the presence of some selected scavengers (dextrose, ferric nitrate, 2,5-dichlorohydroquinone, and formic acid) in aerated as well as in deaerated solutions was further investigated. The ultraviolet and visible spectra of irradiated and non- irradiated samples were finally studied. The results were interpreted on the basis of reactions with the free radicals produced from water.
