By combining chilling with x irradiation of white rats (total dose 700 r), the rate of methionine-S/sup 35/ inclusion falls to 41.1% in muscle protein, and to 81.1% in the liver, as compared with control values. Analogous results were obtained for glycine-C/sup 14/. Maximum absorption of blood serum (280 m mu ) as well as minimum (253 m mu ) were unchanged; but the coefficient of absorption dropped significantly when chilling was combined with irradiation of animals, and less when the animals were irradiated only. Simultaneous paper chromatography showed that chilling combined with irradiation significantly raised the blood content of free amino acids, especially lysine (3 fold). Under the same conditions, cysteine in the urine and especially alanine rose; while the amount of lysine and of glutamic acid fell; but the concentration of the outer amino acids remained unchanged. These are the earliest symptoms of radiation injury and they are evident even during the first few days after irradiation. A link between the phenomena and the course of regenerative processes in animals is postulated. (Referativnyy zhurnal Biologicheskaya Khimiya, No. 8, 1963)
