RADIATION HEMATOLOGIC AND COAGULATION STUDIES IN RATS AFTER WHOLE-BODY IRRADIATION WITH 1200 r

Blood changes were followed for several days after irradiation of adult rats with 190-kv x rays at a rate of 42 r/ min to a total dose of 1200 r. No changes in blood coagulation were noted the 1st two days postirradiation, but beginning on the 3rd day a prolongation of clotting time was noted. This was accompanied by a fall in the level of circulating free heparin, increase in prothrombin, factor V, and factor VII. Thrombin time and thrombin time determined with toluidine blue were decreased; the latter measures heparin-like antithrombin activity. The increase in prothrombin reached 150% after 72 hr and 210% after 80 hr. Elevations of factor V and factor VH were 170 and 140%, respectively. These findings are discussed in terms of the release of kinases and activators of other types from injured irradiated tissue into the circulation which may also be promoted by the resulting tissue anoxia.
