BLOOD COAGULATION, PLASMA PROTEINS, AND HEMATOLOGIC CHANGES IN SUBJECTS CHRONICALLY EXPOSED TO X RAYS

Changes in blood clotting were evaluated by thromboelastography and clotiing factor tests, and plasma protein levels and hematologic values were studied in 13 men and 2 women occupationally exposed to 100- to 120-kv x rays in a radiology department. In all individuals there was a prolonged clotting time, with a tendency toward increase in the Howell time and a dimunition in the Quick time. Thromboelastography showed an increase in time for formation of first fibrin filament in five cases; increase in time for clot formation was noted in eight cases. In some instances there was a deficiency of Factor V and Factor VII, and lower blood prothrombin level. Study of hematologic values indicated a marked platelet deficiency in almost all cases. Slight anemia and leukopenia, accompanied by lymphocytosis, were also noted. Electrophoretic studies of plasma proteins gave normal values. The accumulated exposure to repeated small doses of radiation produces chronic irreversible changes in many clotting factors. Changes in blood coagulatability are ascribed mainly to injurious actions of x rays on megakaryocytes leading to deficiency of platelets and subsequent hemostatic impairment. (BBB)
