LONG LIFE CLOSED LOOP MHD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT. Interim Scientific Report No. 5, March 15, 1963 to June 15, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4653816
Minor design changes were made in the closed-loop magnetohydrodynamic research unit. The bubbled zirconia material that was to be used for heat insulation of the return bends of the loop is being replaced by multiple reilection shields. This change was prompted by an incompatibility manifested between tantalum and zirconia in the presence of cesium. Studies on degradation of the tantalum components of the loop were continued. Aside from the reflection shields, all other components of the loop are ready for assembly. Operation of the loop with nonequilibrium ionization, discharge pumping enhancement, and velocity determination by time-of-flight measurements are discussed. (M.C.G.)
