SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF NIOBIUM IN URANIUM-FISSION ELEMENT ALLOYS

A method is reported for the spectrophotometric determination of as low as 0.01% niobium in uranium fission element alloys (fissium). The method involves forming NbSCN complex in a mixture of tartaric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric acids and extraction into ethyl acetate. The absorbance is measured at 385 m mu . The procedure was tested on synthetic solutions containing known amounts of U, Mo, Ru, Pd, Rh, Zr, and Nb and was satisfactory. Unirradiated U-- 5% fission element alloys having a nominal composition of 0.01% Nb were analyzed by the thiocyanate method and were found to contain 0.011% Nb. (P.C.H.)
