INORGANIC MODEL OF CATALASE AND ITS ACTIVITY AFFECTED BY X-RAY RADIATION

Journal Article · · Bull. Inst. Chem. Acad. Sinica
OSTI ID:4651829

In an attempt to extrapolate the damaging effect of radiation on enzymes, a model enzyme made from nickel carbonate and tagged with manganese was x irradiated. After 10 m.in x irradiation (corresponding to about 2700 rads) the catalase activity of the model enzyme was increased to a maximum value. At this point the activity was found to be 88 mu l O/sub 2//mg model enzyme. The volume of oxygen evolved from H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ depended on the quantity of model enzyme. A similarity of excitation by x radiation existed between model enzyme and natural catalase. (P.C.H.)
