HYPERFINE STRUCTURE AND NUCLEAR MOMENTS OF PROMETHIUM-147 AND PROMETHIUM- 151

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The atomic-beam magnetic-resonance method was used to measure the hyperfine structure of the /sup 6/H/sub 7/2// level in two promethium isotopes. The spins of these isotopes were verified to be I(Pm/sup 147/) =7/2 and I(Pm/sup 151/) = 5/2. The electronic splitting factor (g/sub j/) was measured for the 6/ sup 6/H/sub 7/2// level and i s found to be g/sub j/ = -0.8279(4), in good agreement with the predicted value. The hyperfine constants and the nuclear moments inferred from them are presented. The nuclear moments are corrected for the breakdown of RussellSaunders coupling. The stated errors include uncertainties in the fields at the nucleus arising from errors in the value of (1/ r/sup 3/) and the neglect of core polarization on the magnetic hyperfine structure. Corrections due to the Sternheimer effect were not included. The measurements are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that Pm/sup 147/ is not highly deformed and can be understood from the shell model, but that Pm/sup 161/ is highly deformed and must be interpreted by the collective model.
