ANTITHROMBOPLASTIN AND ANTITHROMBIN ACTIVITY AFTER IRRADIATION

Hypocoagulability in whole-body irradiated rabbits appeared to result primarily from prolongation of an early phase of the clotting process, especially thromboplastin formation. To ascertain whether this was the result of a direct effect of radiation on factors involved in thromboplastin formation or release of an anticoagulant into the circulation, studies were conducted on rabbits exposed to whole-body doses of 200 or 800 r of 220-kv x rays. Antithromboplastin activity, estimated by the method of Tocantins, 1 to 18 days postirradiation, showed no significant changes from the normal in either of the irradiated groups. By this method the prolongation of recalcification time in a mixture of plasma and thromboplastin is measured. Likewise, no change in antithrombin activity was apparent when it was measured by the method of Koller and Fritschy. This finding indicates that there is no increase in the level of heparin or heparinoids in the blood of irradiated rabbits. (BBB)
