ON THE RESULTS AND FAILURES IN THE TREATMENT OF RADIOINJURY OF THE URETERS AND BLADDER IN FEMALE GENITAL CARCINOMA (in German)

Journal Article · · Deut. Gesundheitsw.
OSTI ID:4645938

Thirty cases of radioinjury to ureters and bladder are described, 10 of which were treated conservatively and 20 surgically. As a result of radiotherapy of cervical carcinoma, six developed severe radioinduced cystitis, four cystitis plus ureteral stenosis and urinary stasis, 13 bilateral ureteral stenosis and urinary stasis, four unilateral stenosis and stasis, and three vesicovaginal fistula. Of the 10 patients treated conservatively with bladder instillations and prednisone, five showed improvement, four did not, and 1 died. Of eight treated surgically by nephrostomy, only one was improved and 7 died. Most of the other patients, who were treated by nephrectomy and plastic surgery showed improvement. Most of the nephrostomy patients who died were already in renal failure before intervention. Plastic surgical repair of the injured ureters is described in several cases, and improved urinary function following prednisone therapy was also demonstrated by pyelography. (BBB)
