SYNTHESIS OF A NEW ISOTOPE OF ELEMENT 102 (in Russian)

Journal Article · · At. Energ. (USSR)
OSTI ID:4645918
An isotope of element 102, with the mass number of 258 was synthetized. The isotope was found to be alpha active, with a half life of about 8 seconds. The synthesis was carried out by means of the U /sup 238/ (Ne/sup 22/,4n)102/sup 256/ reaction, and the is otope identified by its daughter, Fm/sup 252/. The Fm/ sup 252/ nuclei were separated from the other nuclear reaction products by collecting the recoil nuclei after alpha decay by an electric field, high resolution alpha spectrometry and ion exchange techniques. A multiply charged, high-intensity, internal cyclotron beam of Ne was used for the experiments. The spontaneous decay half life was found to be several times longer than expected on the basis of studies of element 102 at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. (TTT)
