Synthesis of Element 102 Isotope With Mass Number 256; SINREZ IZOROPA 102-GO ELEMENTA S MASSOVYM CHISLOM 256

>In the nuclear reaction U/sup 238/(Ne/sup 22/ ,4n)102 /sup 256/ an alpha -ac tive isotope of element 102 with mass number 258 has been synthesized. The isotope was detected and identified by the daughter isotope of fermium Fm/sup 252/. The half life of 102/sup 256/ was found to be close to 8 seconds. The energy dependence of the production cross section of 10 /sup 256/ in the reaction U/sup 238/ + Ne/sup 22/ was studied. It has the shape of a curve with the maximum in the region of 112 Mev. The cross section at the maximam point amounts to approximately 4.5 x 10/sup -32/ cm/sup 2/. The experiments were performed in the internal beam of the 310cm heavy ion cyclotron of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research). (auth)
