TERNARY FISSION OF U$sup 235$ INDUCED BY THERMAL NEUTRONS

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
Ternary fission events are studied in the thermal column of a reactor, using a U/sup 235/F/sub 4/ film and three coincidence detectors stationed 120 deg apart around this film (in a plane containing the film). It is demonstrated that the ternary count rate is caused by neither scattering nor accidental events. The distributions of total kinetic energy of the fission products, and of the masses of the fission products, are determined. Surface-barrier detectors are used, and the counting system has a 2 nsec resolution time. A lower limit of 1.2 ternary fissions per 10/sup 6/ binary fissions is indicated by the data. It is noted that the results are valid only at 120 deg spacing of the detectors. (T.F.H.)
