A photographic plate steeped in a uranium salt containing 92.8% U/sup 235/ was irradiated with 14-Mev neutrons obtained from a t(d,n)He/sup 4/ reaction. The plate was placed in a hollow cadmium cylinder containing a charge of boron in order to reduce the thermal neutron background. The total number of binary and ternary fissions was determined by a microscopic scan of the photographic plate. Only longrange alpha particles with a path-length of at least 30 microns were counted as ternary fissions. A total of 65 ternary fissions were detected from about 100,000 binary fissions. After correcting for ternary fissions taking place on the surface of the emulsion or in the glass, the probability of sion of U/sup 235/ was found to be 1: 1350 plus or minus 190 for 14-Mev neutrons. The angular and energy distributions of the fission alpha particles did not diffcr significantly for U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/ and U/sup 238/, and were independent of the energy of the incident neutron. The decrease in the probability of ternary fission with increasing neutron energy can be explained by the formation of a compound nucleus with subsequent evaporation of a single neutron, and fission of the resulting excited nucleus. The data indicated that the probability of ternary fission in the uranium isotopes decreases monotonically with increasing mass. (TTT)
