Title: THE COMPARATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF TERNARY FISSION IN URANIUM AND PLUTONIUM (in Russian)

Journal Article · · At. Energ. (USSR)
OSTI ID:4658238

Data were accumulated on a total of 20,000 ternary fission events for the slow neutron fission of U/sup 233/, 15,000 ternary fission events for U/sup 235/, and 12,000 fission events for Pu/sup 239/. The sum of the energies of the fission fragments E/sub 1/ + E/sub 2/ was plotted as a function of E/sub 1//E/sub 2/ for double an d ternary fission on contour diagrams, where the individual curves indicated the relative fission frequency. The contour lines for double and ternary fission are very similar in appearance, even though the energy of the fission fragments from ternary fission is about l1 Mev lower than from double fission. The contour curves show that ternary fission, like binary fission, is asymmetric. In the ternary fission of U/sup 233/, there was a slight tendency towards a higher yield of elements of lower mass. The decrease in energy of the light fission fragments DELTA E/sub 1/ was about 8.8 Mev for the ternary fission of U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and Pu /sup 239/. The decrease in energy of the heavy fission fragments DELTA E/sub H/ was 8.3 Mev for the ternary fission of Pu/sup 239/, and 6.3 Mev for the ternary fission of U/sup 233/ and U/sup 236/. The results indicated that the nature of ternary fission is very similar for U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and d Pu/sup 239/. (TTT)
