Using autoradiography the incorporation of S/sup 35/ in regenerating stroma of the injured cornea of rats was investigated after influence of beta- rays. After irradiation with a Sr/sup 90/applicator with a radiation dose of 2400 and 6000 rep a significant decrease up to an almost complete inhibition of S/ sup 35/-incorporation could be observed in the injured area 10 and 20 days after the perforating injury. During the time of the greatest S/sup 35/-incorporation (5 days after perforation injury), a significant difference between irradiated and nonirradiated eye could not be observed. After irradiation with a radiation dose of 600 rep a signicant difference in comparison with the non-irradiated controls could not be observed during an observation period of 20 days. The observed changes in the incorporation of S/sup 35/ in regenerating stroma tissue following administration of a higher radiation dose must be considered as the expression of a radiation induced disturbance of the mucopolysaccharid synthesis. Twenty two days after injection and beta-irradiation with 2400 rep, vascularisation of the rabbit cornea caused by intralamellar turpentine injection showed a significant inhibition of the vascularisation and a decreased incorporation of S/sup 35/ in comparison to non-irradiated cornea. Using alloxan- induced vascularisations a significant inhibition after irradiation with 2400 rep could not be observed during the observation period mentioned above. (auth)
