HOMOLOGOUS TRANSPLANTATION OF HEMATOPOIETIC TISSUES AND ITS EFFECT UPON RADIATION INJURY (in Japanese)
Group-bred ddN (CLEA) mice of both sexes 5 to 6 weeks of age were exposed to a single whole-body, 600- or 800-r dose of x rays immediately after homologous bone marrow and lymphatic tissue (thymus, lymph node, and spleen) had been transplanted either singly or in combination. Exposure to 800 r resulted in death of all untreated animals by the 13th day after irradiation. Separate transplantation of bone marrow and spleen, as well as the combined transplantation of bone marrow and spleen, or bone marrow and thymus, prevented acute radiation death but separate transplantation of thymus and lymph node, or combined transplantation of bone marrow and lymph node, did not. Bone marrow transplantation was very effective in animals 7 months old but had little effect in animals 5 to 6 weeks old. Bone marrow transplantation was much more effective than spleen transplantation in 7-month-old animals but little difference in effect was found in the younger animals. Combined transplantation of bone marrow and thymus was highly effective when thymus cells were comparatively few, whereas it was ineffective when thymus cells were present in large numbers. Exposure to 600 r resulted in hyperplasia of medullary hematopoietic tissues at a later stage in nontransplanted controls. Thus, a blood picture and histologic pattern similar to that in myeloid leukemia were seen in animals sacrificed 90 days after irradiation. In groups in which bone marrow transplantation had been made, however, inhibition of medullary hematopoietic hyperplasia was seen. It was concluded that not only repopulation of hematopoietic tissue following homologous transplantation inhibits hyperplastic hematopoiesis in the recipient, but also immune reactions may contribute to the inhibition.
