The nutritional effects of dietary proteins on mice exposed to whole- body gamma irradiation were observed. Young male mice were fed a standard protein diet and one deficient in protein for two or three weeks. The survival rates of mice exposed to a single sublethal dose of whole-body gamma irradiation (1000 r) were observed. The deficiency in protein before irradiation lowered the survival rate of mice, but this effect could be overcome in some degree by the supplement of adequate protein immediately after irradiation. The excessive addition of protein however showed an unfavorable influence. The supplemental effects of some essential amino acids such as threonine and methionine were also examined. (auth)
