ACTIVATION ANALYSIS OF METALS AND THEIR ALLOYS (in French)

Journal Article · · Tokyo Metropolitan Isotope Centre Ann. Rept.
OSTI ID:4643844
The analysis of impurities in aluminum was done by the neutron activation method. After the irradiation of samples the activities of each element contained in the sample were compared with those of the standards by using a gamma -ray spectrometer. If necessary, the chemical separation of some elements was done before the measurement of their activities. Each impurity in aluminum refined by the zone melting has a different behavior. By using this method the distribution of copper and manganese elements was determined in a bar of aluminum refined by zone-melting. The activation analysis of oxygen in metals was studied by neutron activation of the mixture of lithium fluoride and the powdered metallic sample. The content of oxygen in metals can be determined from the activity of F/sup 18/ produced from the following nuclear reactions: Li/sup 6/ + /sup 1/n yields He/sup 4/ + H/sup 3/ a nd H/sup 3/ + O/sup 16/ yields /sup 1/n + F/sup 18/. Irradiation for 1 hour at the the rmal neutron flux of 7 x 10/ sup 11/ n/cm/sup 2/ sec brought about the activity of F/sup 18/ to 20-200 cpm/mgO/ sup 2/, the limit of detection was about 10 ppm. A bit of carbon content in steel was determined by the measurement of the activity of N/sup 13/ produced by the nuclear reaction C/sup 12/(p, gamma )N/sup 13/. (P.C.H.)
