NUCLEAR REACTIONS FROM RECOIL PROTONS IN A REACTOR

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. & Methods
Samples of H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/, (C/sub 2/H/sub 4/)n and H/sub 2/O were exposed to the fast neutron flux next to the core of a 10/sup 5/-watt "swimming pool" reactor. The reactions B/sup 11/(p,n)C/sup 11/, C/sup 12/(p, gamma )N/sup 1/ >s/sup 3/, C/sup 13/(P,n)N/sup 13/, and O/sup 18/(p,n)F/sup 18/ were initiated by r ecoil protons and the positron activities of the products were observed. The yields, in atoms produced per gram of sample per second of irradiation, were 5000 for C/sup 11/, 800 for N/sup 13/, and 100 for F/sup 18/. The fast neutron spectrum was measured with threshold detectors, and the yields were computed. The agreement of the calculated and measured results is good. (auth)
