It was found previously (Zhur. Obshch. Biol., 21: 430 (1963) No. 6) that ovary transplants increase the protective effect of cysteamine. The same approach was extended to the study of effect of protective agents under elimination of the interrerence of the organism, by determining their action in the case of the in vitro irradiation of spermatozoids of chinchilla rabbits. The spermatozoids were exposed to a total dose of 800 r, using a Co/sup 60/ source, while placed in a solution of BETA -mercapto ethylamine or BETA -amino ethyl isothiouronium bromide hydrobromide and also while treating the ejaculate with N. The female animals were artificially inseminated and killed after 18 to 20 days of pregnancy. Irradiation of the spermatozoids in the physiological solution only resulted in 84.5% death among the embryos, as compared with the control group. Of the 3 agents, only N exhibited a protective action, lowering the incidence of dominant lethal injuries. This was due to the reduction of the dissolved 0 in the ejaculate by N. The absence of the protective action in the other cases was probably due to their inability to enter in reaction with the DNA present in the spermatozoid. (TTT)
