It was found earlier (Doklady Akad. Nauk SSSR, 102: whole-body irradiation the concentration of the sulfhydryl group does not change but their activity in the radiosensitive tissues is affected, resulting in a reduction of the SH concentration in the surviving tissue homogenate. This problem was further investigated by studying the effects of protective agents, including morphine, unithiol, BETA -amino ethyl isothiouronium bromide hydrobromide (AET), cysteamine, and cystamine. The tests involved the determination of the changes in the reactivity of the sulfhydryl groups in the spleens of mice. White mice of both sexes were subjected to a dose of 700 r of x radiation, after they were injected with one of the above materials; the amount used was determined on the basis of the survival index. The activity of the sulfhydryl groups was determined after incubation of the homogenate at 37 deg C. The results showed that the sulihydryl group content in the spleen homogenate of both irradiated and unirradiated animals decreases but this decrease is more pronounced in the first case. Introduction of morphine, AET, cysteamine, and cystamine exerted a protective action but addition of unithlol did not weaken the radiation effect. (TTT)
