THE Z-DEPENDENCE OF SINGLE QUANTUM ANNIHILATION OF POSITRONS (in German)

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The Z-dependence of single-quantum annihilation of positrons was studied with the aid of a BETA -ray spectrometer and a counter-telescope. Monoenergetic gamma -quanta due to singlequantum annihilation in thin foils of elements in the range from Z = 50 to Z = 92 were observed at two different values of the positron kinetic energy. According to these measurements at positron kinetic energies of 780 kev and 1100 kev the exponent of Z in the total cross section of singlequantum annihilation is v = 3.2 plus or minus 0.6 and v = 3.8 plus or minus 0.8, respectively, which does not agree with the value predicted by the Born-approximation v(Born) = 5.
