THE SINGLE QUANTUM ANNIHILATION OF POSITRONS (in German)

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
Single-quantum annihilation of positrons in the field of high-Z nuclei is studied with the aid of a BETA spectrometer and a counter telescope. Performing a thin-target experiment, monoenergetic gamma quanta from single- quantum annihilation are observed. The total cross section of this decay mode, measured in the energy range from 260 to 1400 kev, is found to be in agreement with calculations. According to these measurements, a positron of 1500 kev kinetic energy, stopped in a lead absorber, has a probability of 0.17% to annihilate by the emission of a single gamma quantum. (auth)
