THE DETERMINATION OF RADIOSTRONTIUM
The separation of radiostrontium with inactive strontium carrier involves their combined precipitation with barium as the nitrates in fuming nitric acid, scavenging with ferric hydroxide, and removal of the barium by precipitating the chromate. After precipitating the strontium as carbonate and removing any remaining barium with a further chromate precipitation, any occluded chromium is reduced and subsequently removed by a second ferric hydroxide scavenge. Finally, strontium carbonate is precipitated, which is then counted. The method is applicable to solutions of fission products in nitric or hydrochloric acids, and is written with particular reference to the determination of Sr/sup 89/ and Sr/sup 90/. The procedure is especially suitable when a determination of radiobarium is also required. The coefficient of variation should not exceed 5% when counting statistics permit. (auth)
